MISSION & RESPONSIBILITIES

The mission of the Summerdale Police Department is to maximize the quality of life for the citizens of the town we serve; to uphold the law fairly and firmly; to prevent crime; to address the problems of the citizens we serve; to pursue and bring justice to those who violate the law; to keep peace in the town; to protect, help, and reassure all the people in Summerdale; to do all of this with integrity, common sense, and sound judgement.

We will be compassionate, courteous, and patient.  We will act without showing fear, favor, or prejudice to the rights of others.  We will be professional, calm, and restrained in the face of violence and/or irrational behavior.  We will change and mold our department as necessary to maximize our service in meeting the needs of a growing town.

POLICE DEPARTMENT HISTORY

The Town of Summerdale was incorporated in 1929. The title of Marshall was used for head of the police department and was only appointed during shipping season. At that time, the railroad ran through town and was used to ship in seed potatoes and agricultural supplies and ship out the harvest of irish potatoes and grain crops. Since incorporation, the police department has grown from one man during shipping season to a department staffed by six sworn officers, one part time sworn officer, and one civilian employee. A reserve program of three reserve officers provides additional support.
